There was plenty of drama before they entered the ring last time out. Mayer (20-2) left her gym after realizing Kay Koroma would help train Ryan (7-2-1). On fight night, Ryan was attacked outside her hotel, getting red paint thrown on her.
Despite the attack, Ryan went on to fight. They competed in a Fight of the Year contender, with Ryan losing via majority decision.

A former IBF and WBO super featherweight champion, Mayer won welterweight gold in her second attempt. She has attempted to clear her name regarding the paint issue. Now, she only wants to shut Ryan up and continue holding gold.
“I’ve never been one to shy away from challenges. I could have taken my belt and moved on, but it was a highly entertaining fight, and if this is what the fans want, then that’s what I’ll give them,” Mayer said.
“I have stayed in the gym and am getting better every day. It will be worse for Sandy this time, but regardless, expect another action-packed fight.”

“She thinks she’s so tricky. We know that’s how she is. We know she’s going to say that because she doesn’t like to engage anyway, and neither does her coach,” Mayer said. “Her coach wants to hide and stay in the shadows, and he’s probably telling her, ‘Don’t engage.’
“I’m just doing what I have to do. I don’t do anything but speak the facts, and I’m doing my part to sell this fight. Everyone is coming together and working hard to give her the rematch that she wanted. The least she can do is show up and help the promotion of this fight.”
